Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 24, 2026
Short version: We collect the minimum data needed to connect you with nearby help during an overdose emergency. We do not sell your data. We do not track you. Your location is only shared when an alert is active.
1. Who We Are
The OD App is operated by OD App, Inc. ("we," "us," "our"), a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing overdose deaths through community-based response. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that information.
2. Information We Collect
We collect only what is necessary to operate the App:
- Location data — Your GPS coordinates, collected only when you trigger an emergency alert (as a requester) or register as a provider to receive nearby alerts.
- Display name — A first name or nickname you choose. You may use any name; we do not verify identity.
- Push notification token — A device identifier used solely to deliver emergency alerts to your phone.
- Messages — Text you send in the in-app chat during an active emergency.
- Role selection — Whether you are registered as a provider or requester.
3. What We Do Not Collect
- We do not collect your legal name, address, phone number, or email.
- We do not collect health records or medical history.
- We do not collect payment information.
- We do not track your location in the background when no alert is active.
- We do not use advertising identifiers or third-party analytics trackers.
4. How We Use Your Information
Your information is used exclusively to:
- Match people experiencing an overdose emergency with nearby volunteers who carry naloxone.
- Deliver push notifications about nearby emergencies to providers.
- Enable in-app communication between a requester and responding providers during an active emergency.
- Display active alerts on a map to nearby providers.
5. Location Data
Location is the most sensitive data we handle, and we treat it accordingly.
- Requesters: Your location is shared with nearby providers only while your alert is active. When you cancel the alert, location sharing stops.
- Providers: Your approximate location (geohash) is stored so we can determine whether you are within range of an alert. Your precise location is never shared with requesters.
- We do not track or record location history.
- You may revoke location permission at any time in your device settings, though the App cannot function without it.
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information. Ever.
We share data only in these limited circumstances:
- With other users during an active emergency — Providers see a requester's display name and location. Requesters see the display name of responding providers.
- Service providers — We use Google Firebase for data storage and Expo for push notification delivery. These providers process data on our behalf under their own security standards.
- Legal requirements — If required by valid legal process, though we hold minimal data that could be responsive to such requests.
7. Data Retention
- Alert records are retained for operational and safety review purposes.
- Chat messages tied to an alert are retained with that alert.
- Location data associated with a cancelled or resolved alert is no longer actively used.
- Provider registration data is retained while your account remains active.
8. Anonymity
You may use any display name. We do not require or verify your legal identity. If you prefer complete anonymity, use a pseudonym. Providers responding to your alert will see only the name you chose.
9. Security
We use industry-standard security measures including encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS) and access-controlled cloud infrastructure. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
10. Children's Privacy
The OD App is not intended for anyone under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect information from minors. If we learn we have collected data from someone under 18, we will delete it.
11. Your Rights
You may:
- Change or remove your display name at any time in the App.
- Revoke location or notification permissions in your device settings.
- Delete the App, which stops all data collection.
- Request deletion of your data by emailing privacy@odsafe.org.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the App. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
